The 2026 BRICS Summit in New Delhi has concluded with leaders emphasising stronger economic cooperation, sustainable development, technology, trade and a greater role for developing countries in global decision-making. Prime Minister Narendra Modi thanked participating leaders for making the summit productive and outcome-oriented.

The summit comes at a time when the global economy is facing several pressures, including geopolitical tensions, energy-market uncertainty, supply-chain challenges and changes in international trade. Discussions among BRICS countries therefore focused not only on political cooperation but also on practical areas such as technology, investment, finance, agriculture and energy.

Chinese President Xi Jinping also pushed for stronger economic cooperation within an expanded BRICS grouping. China proposed initiatives involving artificial intelligence, services trade and greater economic integration, reflecting the growing importance of technology in international economic competition.

Another important issue was the future role of developing economies in global institutions. BRICS countries have increasingly sought greater representation in international financial and political institutions, arguing that the structure of global governance should better reflect the changing balance of the world economy.

The New Delhi summit also discussed international conflicts and the humanitarian situation in West Asia. The BRICS declaration supported a sovereign Palestinian state and opposed displacement of Palestinians from Gaza, adding a geopolitical dimension to the summit's economic agenda.

newsziffy Explains

For India, hosting the BRICS summit provides an opportunity to strengthen relationships with major emerging economies while promoting cooperation in areas such as digital technology, trade, energy and development. The effectiveness of the summit will ultimately depend on how far the announced initiatives translate into practical cooperation between member countries.
