FSSAI Moves Toward Stronger Warning Labels on Packaged Foods
India's food regulator has proposed a stronger front-of-pack warning system for packaged foods and beverages containing high levels of sugar, salt or fat. The proposal includes prominent warnings designed to help consumers identify products with potentially unhealthy nutritional profiles more quickly.
The move could significantly change how packaged food products are presented to Indian consumers. Instead of requiring shoppers to study detailed nutrition tables on the back of a packet, the proposed system would make key nutritional concerns immediately visible. The proposal is also expected to intensify the discussion between regulators, consumers and the food industry over healthier food choices.
