India Targets Its Own Space Station by 2035

India's ambitions in human spaceflight are moving toward a major new milestone, with Prime Minister Narendra Modi stating that the country aims to establish its own space station by 2035. The announcement places a long-term national space infrastructure project at the centre of India's expanding space programme.

A national space station would represent a major technological step beyond individual satellite launches and crewed missions. Such a facility could support scientific experiments, technology demonstrations and long-duration human spaceflight research.

India's space programme has increasingly expanded beyond traditional government-led missions, with private companies becoming more involved in satellite manufacturing, launch vehicles and other parts of the space ecosystem.

The development comes as India continues strengthening its capabilities in human spaceflight. The proposed space station would also provide a platform for Indian scientists and astronauts to conduct experiments in microgravity and develop technologies needed for future deep-space missions.

Building a space station requires long-term investment in launch systems, crew safety, life-support technology, docking systems and scientific infrastructure. The 2035 target therefore represents a multi-stage programme rather than a single mission.
