India Pushes for Wider Global Expansion of UPI as Digital Payments Continue to Grow

India is looking to expand the international reach of its Unified Payments Interface (UPI), with Prime Minister Narendra Modi calling for greater integration between UPI and payment systems in more countries. The move could strengthen India's position in the global digital-payments ecosystem while making cross-border transactions easier for consumers and businesses.

Speaking at a fintech conference in Mumbai, Modi highlighted the potential for UPI to connect with payment networks in countries that have strong trade relationships with India and large Indian communities. Such integration could help Indians living abroad send money home more conveniently and potentially reduce the cost and time involved in international remittances.

According to Reuters, UPI processed 24.51 billion transactions worth about ₹29.82 trillion in August 2026. The system is already active in 11 countries, including Singapore, the United Arab Emirates, France and Nepal. India has also previously connected UPI with Singapore's PayNow system, allowing faster transfers between the two countries.

Why UPI's global expansion matters

The internationalisation of UPI could benefit more than individual users. Indian exporters, tourists, students and small businesses could potentially gain from easier payment options in participating countries. Wider interoperability could also support India's broader objective of encouraging digital and rupee-based transactions internationally.

However, international payment integration involves regulatory, cybersecurity and data-protection considerations. Each participating country has its own banking regulations, payment infrastructure and consumer-protection requirements. Building compatible systems therefore requires cooperation between central banks, financial institutions and payment operators.

For India, the next stage of UPI's development is likely to focus not only on increasing domestic transaction volumes but also on making the technology useful across borders.

NewzZiffy Explains

UPI is India's instant bank-to-bank digital payment system. Its expansion overseas could gradually make everyday payments and remittances between India and partner countries simpler. The success of future international integrations will depend on regulatory cooperation, security standards and how many countries adopt compatible systems.
