Vaiko to Announce MDMK’s Stand on DMK Alliance
Chennai: MDMK General Secretary Vaiko is expected to announce today whether his party will continue in the DMK alliance or withdraw.
Since 2017, MDMK has been part of the DMK-led alliance. In the recent assembly elections, MDMK contested under the DMK's Rising Sun symbol and won in Kadaiyanallur and Sirkazhi constituencies.
However, following the election results, Congress, Indian Union Muslim League, VCK, and Communist parties have exited the DMK alliance. In the current Thavek cabinet, only the Communists remain outside, while other parties have secured positions. This has led to growing friction between DMK and MDMK in recent months.
At a recent meeting in Virudhunagar, Vaiko expressed regret, stating that MDMK had compromised its dignity and self-respect during its nine-year journey with DMK. Both Vaiko and his son, party secretary Durai Vaiko, have consistently praised the Thavek government.
Amid this tension, MDMK's high-level committee met yesterday at the party office in Egmore, Chennai, to discuss the party's next political moves. An official announcement is expected from Vaiko at the end of today's general council meeting in Koyambedu.
Meanwhile, controversy arose as Sirkazhi MLA Senthilselvan, despite being invited as a special guest, boycotted the high-level committee meeting. Party leadership has decided to seek an explanation, with reports suggesting his reluctance to align with Thavek as the reason for his absence.
The meeting, chaired by Assembly Speaker Arjunaraj, was attended by Vaiko, Treasurer Senthiladipan, Kadaiyanallur MLA T.M. Rajendran, and 18 senior administrators. Discussions reportedly included MDMK's possible exit from the DMK alliance, forming a new alliance with Thavek, and even the resignation of MDMK MLAs to facilitate this move.
