Tamil Nadu Identifies 41 Elephant Corridors to Protect Wildlife

The Tamil Nadu government has informed the Madras High Court that 41 elephant corridors have been identified across the state as part of efforts to protect elephants and reduce human-wildlife conflict. The Forest Department has been given additional time to complete studies and notify the corridors.

Elephant corridors are important ecological pathways that allow herds to move between forests in search of food and water. Encroachment, roads, railway lines and other development projects can interrupt these natural routes and increase the possibility of encounters between elephants and local communities.

The court's intervention places greater emphasis on completing the identification and protection process. Once notified and protected effectively, the corridors could help improve wildlife conservation while reducing risks for people living near forest areas.
