Udhayanidhi Stalin Reaffirms DMK’s Stand Against Redelimitation

In the Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly, Opposition Leader Udhayanidhi Stalin strongly reiterated the DMK’s position that Tamil Nadu must not be adversely affected by constituency redelimitation. He also expressed full support for 33% reservation for women in legislatures.

DMK’s Position:

Udhayanidhi Stalin emphasized that DMK’s stand is clear: Tamil Nadu’s representation in Parliament should not be reduced under any circumstances.

He recalled that former CM M.K. Stalin had earlier raised concerns about redelimitation, writing to seven Chief Ministers and organizing a bill-burning protest on April 16 to highlight opposition.

He credited DMK’s efforts in Parliament for defeating earlier attempts to push the redelimitation bill.

Key Arguments:

Redelimitation should be based on the 1971 census population figures, not later counts that disadvantage Tamil Nadu.

Tamil Nadu’s representation in the Lok Sabha, currently at 7.18%, must not be reduced.

DMK fully supports 33% women’s reservation, aligning with its social justice principles.

Resolution Outcome:

The resolution against redelimitation was introduced by CM Vijay and supported by DMK, Congress, CPI, CPI(M), VCK, IUML, and other allies.

AIADMK, BJP, and PMK opposed the resolution, arguing it was politically motivated.

Despite opposition, the resolution was passed in the Assembly, marking a significant political statement from Tamil Nadu.
