Arnab Cyclone Nears Andhra Coast

Chennai: The deep depression over the Bay of Bengal is set to intensify into Cyclone Arnab today, with the India Meteorological Department (IMD) warning that the storm could make landfall along the Andhra Pradesh coast on October 28. Wind speeds are expected to reach up to 140 kmph, while several districts in Tamil Nadu are likely to experience heavy to very heavy rainfall over the coming days.

Depression Strengthens Over Bay of Bengal:

According to the Chennai Regional Meteorological Centre, the system that originated as a deep depression over the central-east and adjoining southeast Bay of Bengal intensified into a depression on October 24 before strengthening further into a deep depression.

Weather experts predict the system will gain more strength on October 26 and develop into Cyclone Arnab over the central-east and adjoining central-west Bay of Bengal. By October 27, it is expected to become a severe cyclonic storm as it continues moving northwestward.

Andhra Coast Braces for Landfall:

The cyclone is forecast to intensify further into a very severe cyclonic storm while approaching the Andhra Pradesh coast. It is likely to cross the coastline between Bapatla and Visakhapatnam, including the Yanam region, during the morning hours of October 28.

At the time of landfall, sustained wind speeds of 115 to 125 kmph are expected, with gusts reaching up to 140 kmph, posing a significant threat to coastal infrastructure, transportation, and fishing activities.

Another Weather System Adds to Rainfall Threat:

In addition to Cyclone Arnab, a low-pressure area that had been active over the Lakshadweep region in the southeast Arabian Sea has now shifted towards Kerala. A trough stretches from this low-pressure zone across Kerala to the northern Tamil Nadu coast, enhancing moisture flow across the region.

Meteorologists believe this weather pattern will trigger widespread rainfall over Tamil Nadu during the next 48 hours.

Heavy Rain Alert for Tamil Nadu:

The weather department has issued a heavy to very heavy rainfall warning for:

  • Pudukkottai
  • Sivaganga
  • Ramanathapuram

Heavy rain accompanied by thunderstorms, lightning, and strong winds is also expected in:

  • Kanniyakumari
  • Tirunelveli
  • Thoothukudi
  • Tenkasi
  • Virudhunagar
  • Madurai
  • Theni
  • Dindigul
  • Karur
  • Tiruchirappalli
  • Thanjavur
  • Tiruvarur
  • Nagapattinam

Several other districts may witness moderate rainfall through the day.

Rain Likely to Continue:

On October 27, Ramanathapuram district is likely to continue receiving heavy rainfall, while districts along the Western Ghats and other parts of southern Tamil Nadu may experience moderate showers.

Authorities have advised residents in low-lying and flood-prone areas to remain alert as rainfall intensity could increase depending on the cyclone's movement.

Chennai Weather Forecast:

Chennai and its suburban regions are expected to remain under cloudy skies. Isolated areas across the city could receive moderate rain along with thunderstorms and lightning during the day.

Fishermen Warning Issued:

Strong winds are expected over Tamil Nadu's coastal waters, the Gulf of Mannar, and the Comorin Sea region. Wind speeds could range between 35 and 45 kmph, with gusts touching 55 kmph.

Similar conditions are likely to prevail over the north Tamil Nadu coast on October 27 and 28. As a precaution, fishermen have been strongly advised not to venture into the sea until weather conditions improve.

  • Deep depression expected to intensify into Cyclone Arnab.
  • Andhra Pradesh coast likely to face landfall on October 28.
  • Wind gusts may reach 140 kmph.
  • Heavy to very heavy rain forecast for southern Tamil Nadu districts.
  • Chennai may experience moderate rain and thunderstorms.

Oil Prices Rise as Saudi Pipeline Disruption Raises Global Supply Concerns

Oil Prices Rise as Saudi Pipeline Disruption Raises Global Supply Concerns

By newsziffy Editorial Team
September 15, 2026 | World | Trade

Global oil markets came under renewed pressure on Tuesday after attacks on Saudi Arabian energy infrastructure disrupted operations on the country's important East-West oil pipeline. Brent crude rose to around $106.93 a barrel, while U.S. West Texas Intermediate crude moved above $102 a barrel, according to Reuters.

The East-West pipeline is an important alternative route for transporting Saudi crude from oil-producing areas in the east toward the Red Sea port of Yanbu. Its strategic importance has increased because shipping through the Strait of Hormuz has been severely disrupted amid continuing tensions in the Middle East.

The pipeline normally provides Saudi Arabia with an alternative route that can reduce its dependence on the Strait of Hormuz. Reuters reported that the route can carry several million barrels of crude each day, making any prolonged disruption potentially significant for international energy markets.

The latest developments are being closely watched by governments, oil companies, airlines, transport operators and consumers. Higher crude prices can increase costs across the economy because petroleum products influence transportation, manufacturing, logistics and several other industries.

The situation is also affecting expectations for inflation and interest rates. Higher energy prices can make it more difficult for central banks to control inflation, particularly when economies are already dealing with elevated commodity and borrowing costs.

newsziffy Explains

The impact on consumers will depend on how long the disruption continues and whether alternative oil supply routes can compensate. A short-term disruption may have a limited effect, while a prolonged interruption could create greater pressure on crude prices and fuel markets.

For India, which imports a substantial share of its crude oil requirements, sustained high international oil prices could increase the cost of energy imports and place pressure on the rupee and inflation.

BRICS Expands Cooperation in Space and Remote-Sensing Technology

BRICS Advances Remote-Sensing Satellite Cooperation

By newsziffy Editorial Team
September 13, 2026 | News / India

The BRICS countries have announced further progress in cooperation involving remote-sensing satellites, adding a technology and space dimension to the group's broader economic and diplomatic agenda. The development was highlighted in the New Delhi Declaration adopted during the 18th BRICS Summit in India.

The BRICS Remote Sensing Satellite Constellation is designed as a virtual network linking observation satellites operated by member countries. The existing network includes India's Resourcesat-2 and Resourcesat-2A, China's Gaofen-6 and Ziyuan III 02, and Russia's Kanopus-V type satellites. The system can support the exchange and use of Earth-observation information among participating countries.

The summit has also moved toward establishing a BRICS Space Council. Such a mechanism could provide a more structured platform for cooperation between national space agencies and encourage collaboration in areas such as Earth observation, climate monitoring, agriculture and disaster management.

Satellite-based observation has become increasingly important for governments because it can provide information about crops, forests, water resources, land-use changes and natural disasters. For developing economies, these technologies can support planning without relying entirely on conventional ground-based information.

India's involvement is particularly significant because the country's space programme has developed considerable expertise in remote sensing and Earth observation. Greater cooperation among BRICS members could potentially create opportunities for scientific exchanges and joint applications.

newsziffy Explains

Remote-sensing satellites observe the Earth's surface from space and collect information without requiring physical access to every location. Governments can use such data for agriculture, environmental monitoring, urban planning and disaster response.

Chinese President Xi Jinping arrived in New Delhi on Saturday to attend the BRICS Leaders’ Summit and hold bilateral discussions with Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The visit is significant as it marks Xi’s first trip to India in seven years.

The visit comes at a time when India-China relations are gradually moving toward greater diplomatic engagement after years of tensions following the 2020 border crisis. Both countries have been working to manage differences while exploring opportunities to improve economic and diplomatic relations.

Xi’s visit is also important because China remains one of India’s largest trading partners. However, India continues to have concerns about the trade imbalance and market access for Indian businesses.

Why the Meeting Matters

The Modi-Xi meeting is expected to focus on bilateral relations, trade, border issues and the wider regional situation. Both countries are also important members of BRICS, making their relationship relevant to the future direction of the grouping.

Reuters reported that Chinese officials have expressed support for managing differences constructively and strengthening India-China relations from a long-term perspective.

Newsziffy Explains

Improved India-China relations could have implications for trade, manufacturing, technology and regional stability. At the same time, major differences remain, meaning progress is likely to depend on continued diplomatic engagement.

Solomon Pappaiah Dies at 90

Solomon Pappaiah Dies at 90: Tamil Nadu Mourns Beloved Pattimandram Scholar

Tamil Nadu is mourning the passing of renowned Tamil scholar, professor and Pattimandram moderator Solomon Pappaiah, who died at the age of 90 in Madurai on Friday. According to reports, he passed away at a private hospital following age-related ailments.

For generations of Tamil-speaking audiences, Solomon Pappaiah became a familiar and respected voice through Pattimandram programmes, where discussions on literature, society, family, culture and everyday life were presented in an accessible and engaging manner.

A Scholar Who Took Tamil Literature to the Public

Solomon Pappaiah's contribution extended beyond the classroom. He was widely recognised for his ability to explain Tamil literary ideas and social themes in language that ordinary audiences could understand and enjoy.

His Pattimandram programmes became particularly popular on television, helping bring Tamil literary discussion and public debate into homes across Tamil Nadu and among Tamil-speaking communities around the world.

His conversational style, humour and command of Tamil made him a distinctive moderator. Rather than presenting literary subjects only in an academic setting, he helped connect them with everyday experiences and contemporary social questions.

Decades of Service to Tamil

Pappaiah had a long association with education and Tamil literature. He served as a professor at The American College in Madurai and was involved in promoting Tamil language and literature through teaching, writing and public programmes.

His work included literary commentaries and books, while his public appearances helped make Tamil literary discussions accessible to a much wider audience.

Over the years, he became closely associated with the Pattimandram tradition in Tamil Nadu, an important form of public discussion that combines argument, humour and literary references.

Honours and Recognition

His contribution to Tamil language and culture was recognised with several honours. Among the most notable was the Padma Shri, one of India's highest civilian awards, which he received in 2021.

He was also a recipient of the Kalaimamani award from the Tamil Nadu government.

These recognitions reflected his long contribution to Tamil literature, education and public cultural programmes.

A Familiar Face Beyond Literature

Solomon Pappaiah also appeared in Tamil films, including Boys and Sivaji: The Boss, giving audiences another opportunity to see the popular scholar on screen.

However, it was his Pattimandram appearances and Tamil literary work that remained central to his public identity.

For many viewers, his voice and distinctive manner of moderating debates became part of Tamil television culture.

A Legacy That Will Continue

The passing of Solomon Pappaiah marks the end of an important chapter in the modern public presentation of Tamil literature.

His lasting contribution was not simply in the number of debates he moderated or programmes he appeared in. His significance lies in helping demonstrate that Tamil literature, language and social discussion could be presented in a manner that was both intellectually meaningful and entertaining for a mass audience.

At a time when digital platforms are transforming the way people consume information and entertainment, his decades of public engagement offer an example of how language and culture can reach audiences when presented with clarity, humour and accessibility.

Tamil Nadu has lost a respected scholar and cultural voice, but the conversations he helped create through Tamil literature and Pattimandram will remain part of the state's cultural memory.

NewsZiffy Editorial Team extends its condolences to the family, friends, students and admirers of Solomon Pappaiah.

Nationwide Bank Strike Today: Branch Services May Be Affected

Nationwide Bank Strike Today: Branch Services May Be Affected

By NewzZiffy Editorial Team
September 11, 2026 | NEWS

Bank customers across India may face disruptions in branch-based services on Friday, September 11, as banking employee unions have called for a nationwide strike. The United Forum of Bank Unions (UFBU) has announced the protest over unresolved demands involving a five-day working week and issues related to the performance-linked incentive system.

The proposed five-day banking week has been under discussion for some time, with employee organisations arguing that earlier agreements and assurances have not resulted in implementation. The unions have also raised concerns regarding the structure and implementation of performance-linked incentives for public-sector bank employees.

Customers should expect that some physical branch services could be affected during the strike. However, digital banking channels such as internet banking, UPI and many ATM services are expected to continue operating, although individual service availability can vary.

The development highlights the continuing transition in India's banking sector, where customers increasingly depend on digital payments while physical branches remain important for cash services, documentation and other banking requirements.

NewzZiffy Explains:
Customers who require branch-based services may want to complete urgent transactions before or after the strike. Digital payment options can provide alternatives for routine payments, but users should avoid relying on a single payment method for important transactions.

Indian banks warned about technology concentration

RBI Warns Banks About Risks From Heavy Dependence on Technology Providers

Published: September 10, 2026
Category: NEWS | INDIA

Indian banks are increasingly dependent on cloud infrastructure, technology companies and specialised software providers, creating a new type of risk for the financial system. Reserve Bank of India Deputy Governor Rohit Jain has warned that excessive dependence on a small number of technology providers could allow a single disruption to affect several financial institutions simultaneously.

The concern is particularly important as banks continue moving more services online. Digital banking, mobile applications, cloud computing, artificial intelligence and automated risk-management systems have become essential parts of modern financial operations.

According to the RBI warning, a major outage or cyberattack affecting a common technology provider could potentially disrupt multiple banks at the same time. This means that banks need contingency arrangements and should avoid depending too heavily on a single technology ecosystem.

NewzZiffy Explains

Technology has made banking faster and more convenient, but it has also created new forms of operational risk. Diversifying technology providers, strengthening backup systems and regularly testing disaster-recovery plans can help banks maintain services during major technology failures.

India Pushes for Wider Global Expansion of UPI

India Pushes for Wider Global Expansion of UPI as Digital Payments Continue to Grow

Published: September 9, 2026
Category: INDIA | TRADE

India is looking to expand the international reach of its Unified Payments Interface (UPI), with Prime Minister Narendra Modi calling for greater integration between UPI and payment systems in more countries. The move could strengthen India's position in the global digital-payments ecosystem while making cross-border transactions easier for consumers and businesses.

Speaking at a fintech conference in Mumbai, Modi highlighted the potential for UPI to connect with payment networks in countries that have strong trade relationships with India and large Indian communities. Such integration could help Indians living abroad send money home more conveniently and potentially reduce the cost and time involved in international remittances.

According to Reuters, UPI processed 24.51 billion transactions worth about ₹29.82 trillion in August 2026. The system is already active in 11 countries, including Singapore, the United Arab Emirates, France and Nepal. India has also previously connected UPI with Singapore's PayNow system, allowing faster transfers between the two countries.

Why UPI's global expansion matters

The internationalisation of UPI could benefit more than individual users. Indian exporters, tourists, students and small businesses could potentially gain from easier payment options in participating countries. Wider interoperability could also support India's broader objective of encouraging digital and rupee-based transactions internationally.

However, international payment integration involves regulatory, cybersecurity and data-protection considerations. Each participating country has its own banking regulations, payment infrastructure and consumer-protection requirements. Building compatible systems therefore requires cooperation between central banks, financial institutions and payment operators.

For India, the next stage of UPI's development is likely to focus not only on increasing domestic transaction volumes but also on making the technology useful across borders.

NewzZiffy Explains

UPI is India's instant bank-to-bank digital payment system. Its expansion overseas could gradually make everyday payments and remittances between India and partner countries simpler. The success of future international integrations will depend on regulatory cooperation, security standards and how many countries adopt compatible systems.
