Vetri Payanam Scheme Launch

Chennai: In a major expansion of Tamil Nadu's free bus travel initiative for women, the TVK government is set to launch the "Vetri Payanam" (Journey to Success) scheme on October 2, 2026. Chief Minister Vijay will officially inaugurate the scheme, which is aimed at extending free public transport access to a significantly larger number of women across the state.

Ahead of the launch, a review meeting on the preparations and implementation of the Vetri Payanam scheme was held today under the chairmanship of Chief Minister Vijay.

According to an official government statement, the Chief Minister had announced in the Legislative Assembly on August 24, 2026, under Rule 110, that the government is committed to ensuring that no woman in Tamil Nadu loses educational, employment, medical, or other opportunities due to transportation costs. Guided by the principles of social justice and equal access, the government decided to expand the existing free bus travel scheme under the new banner of "Vetri Payanam."

The scheme will be formally introduced on October 2, the birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi.

At present, women are entitled to free travel on ordinary city buses operated by the state's seven transport corporations and on ordinary hill-route buses covering distances up to 40 kilometers.

Under the expanded Vetri Payanam scheme, free travel benefits will now be extended to a broader range of government-operated bus services, including:

Express buses operating in metropolitan and urban areas:

 - LSS services

 - Deluxe buses

 - Mofussil Ordinary (suburban/intercity ordinary) buses

 - Ghat Ordinary buses operating on hill routes beyond 40 kilometers

With this expansion, a total of 12,692 buses will come under the scheme's coverage.

The government said that out of the 18,413 scheduled buses operated by the seven state transport corporations, 12,692 buses, accounting for 69 percent of the fleet, will be covered under Vetri Payanam. Similarly, out of 194,649 daily scheduled trips, 165,312 trips, representing 85 percent, will fall under the free-travel scheme.

Officials estimate that approximately 8.43 million women (84.32 lakh) will benefit from the initiative every day, making it one of the largest women-focused public transport schemes in the country.

The government has also completed the integration of the scheme with Electronic Ticketing Machines (ETMs) used across the transport network. Testing and verification activities are scheduled to be completed by September 25, 2026, while a trial run of the system will be conducted on September 27, 2026.

Chief Minister Vijay will formally launch the scheme on October 2, 2026. The government believes the initiative will greatly improve access to affordable and convenient public transportation for women throughout Tamil Nadu.

The expanded network is expected to particularly benefit:

 - Female students travelling to colleges located far from their homes

 - Women commuting daily to workplaces

 - Women seeking access to healthcare services

 - Women travelling for essential personal and family needs

By eliminating transport costs on a larger segment of the state's bus services, the government hopes to enhance mobility, encourage educational participation, improve workforce access, and support women's economic empowerment across Tamil Nadu.

The review meeting was attended by Transport Minister A. Vijay Tamilan Parthiban, Chief Secretary Dr. M. Saikumar, Additional Chief Secretary for Finance M.A. Siddiq, and several senior government officials.
